SETH

Seth, contender to Osiris’ throne and rival to Horus but always companion to RA, the ambivalent God symbolized the contentious destruction of the afternoon sun. When Horus threw him under the Earth to keep him from his throne Seth roared an earthquake. When Osiris pushed him into the Mediterranean Sea he brought destructive thunderstorms to Alexandria. The hieroglyph written for his name where the same used of storms, anger, confusion and chaos. Natural disaster was often associated with the fault of Seth. He was not always seen as a chaotic God but sometimes a chaotic God for the purpose of defeating a chaotic enemy of RA. Seth was thought to be a follower of RA. It was he who defended the solar barge each night as it traveled through the underworld of the Nile, the only Egyptian deity who could kill the serpent Aphophis, Ra's serpentine enemy, each night as it threatened to swallow the Barge Seth threw himself to Aphophis until RA safely heeded his destination into another day. Then Seth, the strong one, the son of Nut, said "As for me, I am Seth, the strongest of the Divine Company. Every day I slay the enemy of RA when I stand at the helm of the Barge of Millions of Years, which no other god dare do."
