The darker half begins and the summer ends. Samhain is an ancient Celtic festival celebrating bonfires as the harvest is over and the cooler months are to come. It was believed that the exact days between seasons was a doorway as the harvest would seem to 'die' as did many animals after a long and hard summer. It was during this period it seemed to the Gaels that the dead could return to the living through this doorway and reach into the living. Thus masks would be created by artisans to pretend the wearer was a part of the dead and go without notice.
Turnips would be the natural lantern for the night as part of the harvest food it retained itself as a part of the crop. Today the turnip has changed over the years as the lantern into the Jack o' Lantern in the form of a carved pumpkin.
Today Neopagan's continue to celebrate Samhain as the summer closes and autumn rises. Celebrate Samhain with VA!
