I am Riven. I sit alone along the hush of a river in the wilderness of hungarian pine. My parents yell and fight. Sometimes I do not think they know I am alive. Sometimes I feel so alone that all the sound of the river and the trees is the only thing to stop the yelling and fighting and to give me comfort.
I am Riven and I am eleven years old. My cousin abuses me at night and if I tell anyone he says he will kill me. I make no noise and I hold my breath until it is over.
The trees outside my bedroom window are vivid in my memory because as my mouth succumbs to the pillow I look up and stare helplessly out hoping something will come in the night to save me.
I am Riven. I cannot stand to look into the mirror at myself because the reflection is not what I am inside. The face that stares back is someone I have let go and never want to be.
The night I left this world I ran to the woods bleeding. When I found the edge of the river I looked into the water that moved steadfast downstream until I could see my reflection. I slapped at the water hopelessly until I fell in forever.
