NA Perfume Description
During the Holidays in Egypt, people visit their friends and neighbours taking with them special homemade sweets and pastries. KAIK is one of the more favourite shortbreads rolled in cinnamon and sugar and sprinkled sometimes with walnuts or pistachios.
Our version is the same traditional recipe only we have added allspice and apricot fruit and dusted it with Egyptian sugar. I remember being in the sugar fields in Egypt and the scent was overwhelmingly soothing. I also remember seeing an over abundance of beautiful white and blue heron - this is why she is in the label). There was something about having a nice spot of tea and being in those fields that made me realize how splendorous simple things are. When we were offered a plate of different sweets I initially reached for Malban but my fingers danced above the pastries and finally landed on KAIK. I was told the story of where the pastry came from and how the Egyptian armies would be in the desert for weeks and finally coming home was so much of a treat they could not wait for a special occasion because this was a special occasion to be home again. The men and women would celebrate with family and friends and neighbours and tea and KAIK would be served on a special golden plate. To me it is like a cinnamon roll only it is more special than an ordinary pastry dessert – it has a meaning of comfort and hospitality and the true notion of what celebrating is all about. This is our ode to a timeless tradition and a scent to inspire the gold of the season.
