The Celebration of Halloween! The term Halloween comes from All Hallows' Eve or Even, which in turn was a shorter word for 'evening'. This Eve of All Hallows' Day (All Saints) was often met with religious festivities and Pagan traditions. Witches, Black Cats, Vampires, Mummies, Monsters and spooky ghost stories encompass the realm of the living and the dead on this day of the spirits.
One tradition was to tell the tale of old Stingy Jack, an Irish farmer lad that made a deal with the devil to climb a tree where he had carved a cross into it. The devil would become trapped there until the next naive person passed by and let him out. The devil did not like this joke and cursed Stingy Jack to walk the Earth only at night scaring everyone in his path. The term Jack O'Lantern comes from this old Irish tale as Jack was given a candle and a hollowed out turnip to walk the Earth at night. Soon, as all traditions do, the evolution from turnip to pumpkin became a new custom and left on the doorstep outside of ones home. It is said that this is also the evolution of Celtic Ancients putting skeletons in their windows to calm the departed.
Masks and festivites soon ensued and became a place where the dead and the living walked the Earth together and man, hidden under masks, could become a part of that which must not be spoken lest it take your breath away, the candle of your Jack O' Lantern blow out and the demons come to your doorstep in search of candy.
All Hallows' Eve and to all a good fright.
